Aviators Sweep Doubleheader

LAFAYETTE, IN – On a hot July Day, the Lafayette Aviators swept the West Virginia Miners in both games of the doubleheader. The first game was won 10-2 and the second concluded in a 9-1 victory. Lafayette had efficient hitting and quality performances on the mound to start the home stand off right. The Aviators scored a run in 11 of the 14 total innings on Thursday.

The first game started hot with a two-RBI triple from Ethan Bedgood. Lafayette couldn’t be stopped after that. A four hit, three run inning in the fourth gave the Fly Boys enough momentum to seal the game. By the end of the night starting pitcher Jackson Dannelley and reliever, Judson Schaper, combined for nine punchouts. Dannelley improved his record to 2-0-1 while the Aviator offense rached up 11 hits for 10 runs.

Game two was less competitive than the first, but resulted in another dominant win. Lafayette opened up the second game with another two-RBI triple from Peyton Henry in the bottom of the second inning. A combined seven walks among all Miner pitchers helped the Aviators t0 a 9-1 victory. Lafayette was able to succeed at the plate thanks to a complete game from starting pitcher, Tyler Yotkewich, who not only pitched all seven innings for a win but also tied this season’s record for most punchouts in a single game with 10.

Yotkewich improved to 3-3 this season while the Aviators now ride a two-game win streak (20-26) as they start this four game home stand. Lafayette is back in action tomorrow night, July 22nd, against the Terre Haute Rex. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. EST and Aviator fans can tune in on Prospect League TV.
