Cornbelters Get Wild; Aviators Get Win

LAFAYETTE, IN. – The Lafayette Aviators snapped a four-game losing streak after Cornbelter reliever, Bode Gebbink, threw wildly to first base, attempting to pick off Mike Koszewski, allowing Drew Behling to score the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning. Innings one, two, and three totaled four runs with the Cornbelters striking first. Jared Comia scored an unearned run after an error by the catcher.

The Aviators quickly answered back by scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Nolan Tucker hit an RBI double followed by an unearned run from Tucker when the third baseman, Figuera, was given an error. The Cornbelters would tie the game in the top of third after Wilson Zuck scored on a sacrifice fly.

Scoring would take a back seat for four innings as the two defenses would trade athletic plays and a pair of 1-2-3 innings each. In the seventh inning, the Cornbelters would add a run when Zuck drove in Henson with a sacrifice hit.

The Aviators would rip away the momentum when Tanner Craig hits the eighth home run of the season. He was followed up by four consecutive singles, two of which would score. With the Aviators leading 5-3, it seemed locked up, but the Cornbelters didn’t back down. Jeremy Figueroa hit a triple to center field that drove in the tying runs before being caught at home on a go-ahead signal.

Both squads would sit at a stalemate until the bottom of the 11th inning when the final Cornbelter mistake would seal the win for the Aviators. This was the second walk-off win for the Fly Boys, and the seventh home win.

Lafayette is back in action tomorrow, June 23rd, to take on Champion City in the second of a six-game homestand. First pitch is at 7:00 p.m. EST. Lafayette is 2-1 v the Kings.
